I HAD A CONTRACT TRANSLATED BY AI, AND IT HAS LANDED ME IN A WORLD OF TROUBLE. WHO DO I SUE?

 No one, really. You are on your own! AI translation is known for “hallucinations”, whether the project is going from English into a foreign language, or vice-versa. So, having a document translated by AI is tantamount to getting medical, accounting, nutrition, physical therapy and real estate advice without the aid of a professional.

 At the time it sounded like a good idea. Why spend US$250.00 translating a simple contract when you can get it for free with AI tools such as google, linguee, microsoft, chatgpt, etc.? You say “the translator is using AI to do it, anyhow. I will buy myself some good wine, instead.”

 Let me just give you an example. I was editing a petition that was translated by AI, from English to Spanish. Around page 16 of 25, the petition mentioned several accounts, defining them. One of the accounts, M***** L**** (a known and reputable securities firm), was abbreviated as “ML Account”. Guess what AI did? It translated “ML Account” into “MONEY LAUNDERING ACCOUNT”, not once, but FIVE TIMES. Given the petition was going to be submitted in litigation it would certainly cause huge problems. It is a good thing the client hired me to edit the petition, and I caught this mistake, as well as several others.

 Let us say the translation was submitted without editing, and the account holder was investigated or accused of money laundering activities. Do you think the AI platform (run by one of the top Silicon Valley firms, by the way) could be held liable for any expenses and inconvenience? Not really. You are on your own. These platforms all come with disclaimers that clearly exempt them from any liability, so it is used at your own risk.

  Additionally, these platforms do not certify the translations. Sure, you may get a sympathetic notary and a clueless individual to certify it for you, but again, the multi-billion-dollar conglomerate will be free of any wrongdoing, the best you can do is hold the notary and the clueless friend accountable.

 Therefore, it is not a good idea to have sensitive or even the simplest of documents translated by AI, because the output is not guaranteed. In my experience, people trust AI too much and believe it is perfect, so they do not even read the final text. Plus, many people trust it blindly, unable to understand the translated text.

 FCCPT is the top choice for foreign physical therapists seeking credentialing in the US.
