Universidad Manuela Beltran, from Colombia, probably has the
longest physiotherapy syllabus of all: they range from 850 pages to 1700 pages.
That means that the $20 per page pricing widely advertised by translation sites
would result in a cost of US$17,000 to US$34,000.
The fact is that lots of these pages contain very little
text, but per-page translation sites are adamant that their pricing policy is
fair. Basically, it could mean that UMB graduates striving to get their physiotherapy
credentials in the USA would need to make a hefty payment to finance their
hopes.
I have personally translated many hundreds of physiotherapy
syllabi for FCCPT, the main credentialing company for PT in the USA, for over
30 years, and am extremely familiar with what they want and need to make an
evaluation, and the majority of what is in the Universidad Manuela Beltran is
not necessary. So my prices end up being in the neighborhood of US$2,000.00,
because I know what I am doing. UMB graduates are very happy with that.
I see in some internet PT Facebook groups that some UMB students
attempt to buy copies of the translations done by other students. First, it
would violate FCCPT’s rules, that require translations be sent by the translator,
and properly structured. Second, I have never seen two UMB Physiotherapy syllabi
that are alike. The subject sequence varies, and there seem to be myriad
versions of these descriptions. This means, it has to be done individually.
Then there is the issue of IERF. A lot of Physiotherapists
complain that FCCPT fees are higher than IERF’s, and also, that FCCPT takes
much longer to issue its evaluation. On the other hand, IERF’s policy demands
that the entire syllabus be translated, except for bibliography. This means
that even charging per word as we do, rather than per page, the UMB syllabus
would still cost about $13,000, and that is after a heavy discount has been applied.
This wipes out any fee advantages, I suppose. I believe IERF is a good bet for students from
India, England, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Philippines,
who have documents that are already in English.
